Dell Backup and Recovery

Denny Reilly - Dennis_P_Reilly@Dell.com

why backup? to restore

 Full, Incremental, Synthetic

Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

how far back in time does data need to be recovered if disaster occurs?

how much are you willing to lose?

Recovery Time Objective (RTO)

how much time will pass after a disaster before operations are online again?

how long can you afford to be down?

low bandwidth - tape or DAS

eliminate bottlenecks

  1. implement ULAN for backup ip traffic
  2. TCP/ IP offload Engine NICS
  3. dedicated tape drive
  4. install multiple backup servers.
  5. implement storage area network for LAN free backup.

Server free backup

everything to disk

still an emerging solution

LAN free backup

exchange of metadata

Tape performance

goes at certain speed

Backup to disk

faster file restores

RAID protected

scalable & upgrade path

justify disk backup

Tape - excellent, portable, low cost compliment to disk backup

snapshots vs clones

Clone - uses a lot of disk space

snapshots are good for flat files such as home directories.

Clones - SQL, Exchange

SCSI - going away, 16 devices. Fibre Channel is 126.

SCSI - 25'    FC 10,000 meters

Replication - array based is more expensive

most schools use DAS
