Ø Minutes–Regular Meeting-March 8, 2004 and Special Meeting–Work session–March 23, 2004
Ø Accepting the following donations:
- $750 from 56 Mini Mart to Boy’s Basketball
- $1,000 from Logan Elm Athletic Boosters to Track
- $1,000 from Logan Elm Athletic Boosters to Baseball
- $200 from Sertoma to McDowell Exchange School
Ø The appropriation amendments as presented.
Ø THE FOLLOWING THREE RECOMMENDATIONS AS A RESPONSE TO THE DISTRICT’S FINANCIAL STABILITY DUE TO:
§ lack of growth in local property taxes (no new taxes in 10 years)
§ state funding reductions
§ failure of local 1% income tax levy – March 2, 2004
1. The following budget cuts for the 2004-05 school year:
§ Eliminate 2 teaching positions $100,000
§ Eliminate 1 bus driving position $17,000
§ Eliminate 3 part-time cooks $14,364
§ Reduce technology budget $50,000
§ Eliminate bus purchases $115,000
§ Reduce maintenance/building repair budget $135,000
§ Reduce 6 school building budgets $100,000
(textbooks, copiers, supplies)
§ Reduce professional development activities $14,000
§ Reduce administrative budget $40,140
(awards, conferences, cell phones, surveys,
legal assistance, professional memberships,
contracted services)
§ Reduce program offerings $58,446
(limited summer school, distance learning lab,
alternative education opportunities, course
offerings at LEHS)
§ Limit overtime pay $12,000
(custodians, summer kindergarten screening) _________
Total $655,950
2. Increasing “participation fees” for athletics and marching band to $100, high school ($200 maximum per student) and $60, McDowell ($120 maximum per student) for the 2004-05 school year. Anticipated revenue $40,000.
3. Exploring accepting “open enrollment” students from neighboring school districts for the 2004-05 school year. Anticipated revenue $75,000.
THESE THREE STEPS IN THE PLAN ESTIMATE A TOTAL OF $770,950 SAVINGS TO THE GENERAL FUND FOR THE 2004-05 SCHOOL YEAR.
Ø The summer intervention program as presented and authorize the Superintendent to employ minimal staff required.
Ø Adopting the following resolution:
WHEREAS, our staff works hand-in-hand with parents to shape the lives of our children; and
WHEREAS, our society expects all children to achieve success in public schools; and
WHEREAS, the future of our country depends upon the success of our youth today; and
WHEREAS, our staff works above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that today’s students have the knowledge to become contributing members of society; and
WHEREAS, we recognize the important influence teachers and other staff members have on the future of our community and of our country;
NOW, THEREFORE, we the members of the Logan Elm School Board do hereby proclaim the week of May 3-7, 2004, as STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK in the Logan Elm Local School District, and we urge all citizens to join with us in expressing appreciation to our staff for their dedication and hard work.
Ø The summer athletic camps as presented.
Ø A request from the Girl Scouts to hold a Sunday evening awards ceremony May 16, 2004, at Washington Elementary School.
Ø The list of graduates for the class of 2004 pending the successful completion of all requirements for the diploma as presented and additionally permit the seniors to be excused from classes the last three days this year to prepare for graduation as permitted by Ohio Revised Code.
Ø Entering into an agreement with Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company, N. Carol Insurance Agency, to provide optional student accident insurance for the 2004-05 school year:

The Board agreed to meet in executive session on April 28 beginning at 3:30 P.M. to review applications for the Superintendent’s position. Initial interviews will be conducted in executive session beginning May 4 and 5, 2004.
